Saying goodbye to your be-loved one, whether it be a person or a tree, is always difficult. This apple tree graced my yard for nearly two decades since I grew it from a sapling. Even the cat loved it. But a disease got it last fall. I hope it will grow new branches next spring.

I had a similar “tree” experience. At school my biology teacher gave everyone a tiny sapling. Dad planted it and it grew, but around 15 years later he had to cut it down because it was higher than the house and he was worried about the roots. Quite sad!
